The key to making your practice work for you — and for your students — is to know the body well enough to understand the practical purposes of the poses, and how to make them work for you!

In this two-day hybrid teacher training event, Doug Keller will take you through the two vital areas of the body addressed through yoga — the pelvic girdle and shoulder girdle, which directly affect the health of the low back and neck.

Saturday,  Aug. 27  The Pelvic Girdle

Saturday’s sessions will focus on the actions in and around the pelvic girdle and low back, starting with some new and practical insights into the actions of your feet, and how they communicate with your knees, hips, and low back. Key insights will include the psoas and how it really works in functional movement, and how it is released to do its job well through yoga; the piriformis and its role in sacral stability in connection with the hamstrings, back muscles, and core muscles, and the muscles of the hips, both abductors and adductors. This will include experiential exercises and clear alignment and action pointers that make our practice effective for addressing pain problems that commonly arise when these muscles are not working right.

Session 1 will be lecture with examples.

Session 2 will be a guided practice applying the principles.

Sunday,  Aug. 28  The Shoulder Girdle

Sunday’s sessions will focus on the shoulder girdle — understanding its structure, and the keys to movement and stability that support the health of not only the shoulders, but the upper back, neck, and support freedom of breath. Though this covers a lot of ground, our focus on key muscles and their balanced actions will help you to feel confident with working more clearly in yoga poses, while understanding the sources of problems and limitations, and the benefits of alternative approaches to the poses.

The lectures will include illustrated notes for you to keep and review, as well as practical examples and applications in asana, from a perspective that takes into account the significant differences between individual students’ bodies — including the unique features of your own!

Session 1 will be lecture with examples.

Session 2 will be a guided practice applying the principles.
